Sierra Leone Forests & Forest Communities
SIERRA LEONE FORESTS
PROTECT US ALL
Sierra Leone forests provide livelihoods for many communities. Our forests provide a home for xx% of our species. Our forests also capture CO2 which stops climate change accelerating and they prevent soil erosion.
Yet our forests are in danger. Primary rainforest used to cover around 70% of Sierra Leone. By the mid-2000s this has reduced to around 6%.
Deforestation in the Western District continues with unchecked commercial logging and settlements on the outskirts of Freetown expand unplanned.
Deforestation in rural areas continues with slash and burn of land conversion for cattle grazing. Cattle are a significant methane producer - a climate accelerator so that's not good news.
That's why we call for a moratorium on all commercial logging in Western district.
If we protect the things that protect us we can fight climate change.
