Historic Cotton Tree Falls at Upgun Cemetary

Alfred Fornah

Violent storms hit Freetown last week felling the historic cotton tree at Upgun Cemetary in the east end.

This once majestic landmark tree, symbol of Sierra Leone's history, was uprooted in violent storms, which are becoming fiercer and more frequent as climate change takes place.

Greaves were destroyed as the tree fell but luckily no person was harmed.

More trees and people will be in danger as storms occur more often and at a greater intensity.
