AMAZING AZOLLA COMBATS CLIMATE CHANGE

On the teams recent visit to Karene visiting our friends at Hope Sakuma we were pleased to interview project coordinator, Amabest about a unique Azolla-based bio-system set to benefit family farmers in rural Sierra Leone. A nature-based solution providing all the nutrients rice needs to grow, reducing farmers’ fertilizer costs and weeding time with profitable duck eggs and fish to sell from the same plot – an intensive, sustainable and profitable whole-cycle farming system. Amabest explains how Hope Sakuma was able to implement the biosystem with technical assistance and support from the Azolla Foundation. Best of all, from our perspective as a climate action group working in the third most vulnerable country to climate change - all the while Azolla benefits farmers it also stores more planet-warming CO2 and nitrogen than forests - helping Sierra Leone play its part fighting climate change.
