SIERRA LEONE SCHOOL'S CLIMATE ACTION ART COMPETITION UNDERWAY!

The first training session for an innovative EU-funded artwork competion between 10 schools took place today at the Freetown Teachers College aiming to foster youth’s active and constructive engagement in climate action, with training of teachers and students.

Three lucky schools will win prizes and have their winning artworks exhibited at the British Council during Climate Diplomacy Week to raise awareness of climate change in the third most vulnerable nation to it's dangerous impacts.

Pupils from Mayford, Huntingdon Secondary School, Peninsular Secondary school, Kelly's Secondary School and Joy Secondary School drawn from our western rural district received training and art materials to undertake the grand competition. Schools were selected using criteria including previous participation in climate change advocacy or in green or nature clubs.

The works will be presented by the students to the Panel of Judges on 2 October 2019 with the three best schools announced and awarded a prize two days later. The winning artworks will be displayed at the British Council to showcase examples of community climate action, in each school's locale.

The collaborative competion funded by the European Union and designed and delivered by Sierra Leone School Green Club (SLSGC) and Society for Climate Change Communication Sierra Leone (S4CCC), sees these climate action champions and SDG Ambassadors share their knowledge with pupils about the art competition's themes tackling deforestation, land degradation, sand and artisanal mining; pollution; waste management;

protection of marine/costal areas; sustainable use of land, ocean and water and good practices in industry, renewable energy, water, and transport.
