OCEANS DAY BEACH CLEAN-UP BEATING PLASTIC POLLUTION

Sierra Leone's big beach clean-up on World Oceans Day saw a huge public turnout from Aberdeen to Hamilton leaving beaches beautifully clean and plastics-free!

The big beach clean-up saw Freetown citizens, the Mayor of Freetown, the national Tourist Board, local environmental champions, the EU and UK in Sierra Leone join forces to beat plastic pollution and leave clean beaches and clean seas.

Tom Vens, EU Ambassador explained that:

"dumping plastics in the ocean poses a serious threat to fish and our oceans bio-diversity and I must add that the sand-mining along the beaches is heart-breaking to see."

The UK's Deputy High Commissioner exhorted citizens:

"We are all responsible to take care of our own dirty - we must stop littering these beautiful beaches."

The Deputy Minister for Tourism thanked the European Union and the UK for supporting this laudable effort.

The massive turnout of public support for the big clean up saw the beautiful beaches at Aberdeen, Lumley, Lavuma and Hamilton left spotless. One of the children helping keep Hamilton beach clean explains why:
