PLANTING 'TREES 4 SCHOOLS' WITH HOPE

A fruitful trip to visit Hope Sakuma sustainable farm finds S4CCC helping kids from Hope's interim care programme plant coconut saplings and meeting with local climate activists for some preparatory work in advance of launching our schools tree planting programme next year in Sanda Magbolontor, a chiefdom ravaged by logging and deforestation.

Director, Alfred Fornah shows Mya, Leo and Sierra how. to plant coconut saplings utilizing an intensive method of 3 metre spacing between a triangle of three trees and 12 metre spacing between rows. And the kids use the rows to mark out Hope Sakuma's boundary next to their cassava and cashew farm, two drought-resistant crops that are helping these rural farming communities diversify and adapt to climate change.

After the coconut tree planting with the kids a very fruitful meeting with the Hope Sakuma team and climate activists from Makelekos, Manays, RoGbin, RoGbarran and Lunsar who are pleased to learn that Hope Sakuma’s orchards will, in time, seed school orchards throughout Sanda as we bring our innovative schools programme to Karene next rainy season, boosting pupils nutrition and raising awareness about the vital role trees play in fighting climate change.

And we're happy that our partners, Hope Sakuma commits to providing some cashew saplings for the programme and three local schools are already on board Trees 4 Sanda Schools.
