MORE TREES 4 SANDA SCHOOLS
A fantastic turn-out for Society 4 Climate Change Communications ‘Trees 4 Sanda Schools’ first assessment visit and follow-up session with eight participating schools in Sanda Magbolontor. Pupils from Sendugu Junior Secondary, Sendugu RC Primary, Manays RC Primary, Makelekos DEC Primary, Mabarie RC Primary, Gabaneh Loko RC Primary, RoYema RC Primary and Mayeamie Student Welfare Primary schools gathered in Chiefdom capital, Sendugu. to hear from climate diplomat and activist, Alfred Fornah, Hope Sakuma partnership coordinator Mo Bangura coming to learn from pupils some of their challenges.
Big congratulations and prizes too for best-performing school, DEC Makelekos and runners-up, RC Sendugu, with well-established saplings, each receiving a cash-money prize and more note books .
The four top-performing schools each receiving eight more saplings of moringa, arcacia, breadfruit, tamarind, cashew and guava and the remaining four, six saplings each. As well as checking on the cashew saplings planted back at the end of July, hearing some of the challenges pupils faced and presenting more saplings an informative discussion followed with teachers explaining the medicinal importance of moringa and arcacia and breadfruits’ ram-packed nutritional benefits.
Farmers and children alike recognized how the erratic weather was leading to a change in seasons and pupils were eager to learn of international governments COP26 plans to accelerate climate action in this crucial decade ahead to keep 1.5C temperature rise in reach and end deforestation by 2030 to tackle, as one very bright schoolgirl identified, global warming.
The joint climate action initiative between Society 4 Climate Change Communication and Hope Sakuma aims to help reforest a chiefdom ravaged by deforestation and meet Sierra Leones national target of planting five million trees in four years.
Behind the camera, S4CCC communications director, climate activist and star film-maker, Vidal Sesay.
