TALKING DEFORESTATION & CLIMATE CHANGE IN SIERRA LEONE HEARTLANDS

The Society 4 Climate Change Communications team were happy to join Mama Mayila and the Hope 4 Ebola Orphans team at their big Hope Sakuma stakeholders meet at Sendugu, Sanda Magbolontor chiefdom capital, with the Regent Chief, councillors and FBO chairmen and chairladies. Hearing citizen's concerns over corruption and theft which the Regent Chief himself and councillors promised to take up and help kick out corruption from Sanda.

We were able to put sustainability and the sustainable development goals on the Chiefdoms agenda enjoying an animated discussion on the impact of deforestation and climate change on agriculture commending Hope Sakuma farmers for diversifying into drought-resistant crops - practical and very necessary steps to climate adaptation.

It was a pleasure crossing the Mabanta on our return journey with the Hope team - with a sense that this mission's accomplished and the next mission's about to begin. We shared some great ideas for reporting illegal logging and heard from our partners about Azolla, a miracle plant that's not only a fertilizer but can store more CO2 than a hectare of forest and mangroves combined - something which has the potential to really help tackle climate change!
