HIKING SIERRA LEONE'S ATLANTIC COAST ON WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY

Celebrating World Migratory Bird Day the Society 4 Climate Change Communication team took to Sierra Leone's Atlantic coast on a Bird Hike and Bird Watching field trip at the Minnerware Coastal Community, Kissy Dock Yard, Freetown.

This is one of our many Atlantic coastal communities that attract Migratory Birds from far-off distances to the shores of Sierra Leone and our neighbours along the coast.

The team were sad to see the state of the cove covered in plastic waste, washed up from the ocean.

Plastic waste is such a problem for our fine beaches and not good news for birds that come to feed.

During the Bird Hike and Excursion the team came across some children, down in the cove.

The team witnessed the children capture a small chick and we discussed with the children the importance of the Day and Sierra Leone being a safe haven for migratory birds and talking together, we negotiated the birds release.

World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) was initiated in 2006 and is an annual awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats.

The annula World Migratory Bird Day has global reach, helping raise global awareness of the threats faced by migratory birds, their ecological importance and the need for international cooperation to conserve them.
