SIERRA LEONE PUPILS TAKE ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION

Pupils from FTC Primary school having fun learning about the impact of poor waste management on their communities and the environment. Using these large waste collection bins, pupils from 10 education facilities in the Western Rural district learn how to collect and sort waste collection, separating plastic and metal that can be recycled in this innovative climate change and environmental management pilot project.

The girls at Kelly's Rural Secondary School learn how to make compost and leaf mulch as well as recycling for the next stage of the innovative project involving planting orchards and vegetables to boost nutrition and provide a small income for the schools.

Portee Vocational Institute have been working overtime sorting plastics that can be recycled preventing them despoiling the community and ocean.

Funded by the UK based charity, the Sierra Leone Poverty Alleviation Charity Trust (SALPACT), delivered by partners Sierra Leone School Green Club (SLSGC) and Sierra Leone Society 4 Climate Change Communication (S4CCC). SALPACT’s funding is also supporting these pilot schools to establish school farms, where pupils can learn to grow commercial crops and trees and become Sierra Leone’s farmers of the future.
