MAYOR LAUNCHES FREETOWN FLOOD MITIGATION PLAN
As long time campaigners for early action to prevent flooding we whole-heartedly support the mayor’s new plans launched June 20th to take urgent action across Freetown intensively clearing our blocked culverts, drains and gullies to lessen the effects of rainy season flooding.
Freetown’s new Flood Mitigation plan of action will see 15 days intensive cleaning immediately reduce flooding risks while taking the opportunity to start wider community sensitization on proper disposal of our dirties.
Launching the Flood Mitigation Plan of action, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, Her Worship the Mayor of Freetown said: “Our Plan uses simple, cost-effective methods that all of Freetown’s residents can follow every day to save lives. With small changes to our behaviour we can all be good neighbours and help save our city from another disaster.”
Hamid El-Bashir, UNICEF Sierra Leone added: “Preparedness is crucial to ensure the safety of resientds in the event of an emergency and we are supporting Freetown City Council in this initiative …to prevent flood related disasters and the accompanying disease outbreaks.” Freetown residents are called on to play their part and not to throw away their ditry on the street or in the gutters. The programme of works has been developed in response to a mapping exercise of flood prone communities undertaken by our Armed Forces and Roads Authority.
